Environment Conservation & Sustainability

Environment Conservation and Sustainability; empowering of communities in environment conservation practices with economic and livelihood benefits. Natural resources especially forests and wetlands are crucial for the survival of most rural poor throughout the world. Although forests and wetlands provide many goods and services for human well-being, their usefulness depends on their accessibility, use and control. Masindi district has a diverse natural resources, which when properly utilized provide a high potential for sustainable socio-economic development.

However, the unplanned increase in population at a rate of 5.3 per cent which is much higher than the national rate of 3.3%, has exerted pressure on the limited natural resources within the district. Overgrazing, charcoal burning, excessive tree harvesting, conversion of forest land into agriculture, alcohol distillation in wetlands and bush fires, when all these factors combined, the sustainability of environment and natural resources in the district is put at a threat.
